Nestor's Trudvang Chronicles (spoiler alert!!!)

Hi out there,

in this topic I will tell the story of my Trudvang gaminggroup. Because of the special circumstances with Covid-19 these times we will start to play online. Right now we are four players - two male and two female - and me as the GM.
First session was to decide what rules we will use to start this new group with. Trudvang Chronicles won this poll because of the exquisit background (Norse and Celtic world/myths with nature (and Trolls) as main challange). Other competitors were Carphanaum (Arabian Nights), Coriolis (Space Opera), Symbaroum (quite similar but lower Dark Fantasy), The Lost Lands (very basic Dark Fantasy) and Numenera (Science Fantasy). But WAT!
In the second session we will build the player characters. We will use the core rules without Muspelheim or Stormlands additional rules, just to have a start. I announced that we can change this if there is a reason a character has to leave the group (death, lost in the foggs etc.). Maybe we can start the first scenario "Kidnapped by Trolls". This is a short introductory scenario for completely new characters (and players). It was published by Truant Games for the German "Gratisrollenspieltag 2020". After that we will go into the "Wildheart".

I am very excited to start in this wonderful and colorful world. Next post will be published to describe the characters and maybe the beginning of their path.

And here we go... The player characters - one zvorda fighter, a middlander ranger, a middlander dimmwalkeress of Gave and a changeling vitnerweaveress - finished their job as farmhand and wanted to go to the next market just to spend all their hard(ly?) earned silver when their boss asked them to get some provisions from his farm to that of his cousin Magne. So they stayed another night with party and merry. The next morning the party managed to stear the cart on a small track in the direction of Magnes farm. The Zvorda because of his superb cartography skills already knew a cave on the way to their destination so Magnes fighting band they encountered on the track only confirmed what they knew. But the existence of some muggers in that area was new information. They encountered the muggers not far away from the cave. Husk and his siblings managed to block the rack in a very confusing place with many blackberry bushes. The ambush was well initiated but the missing bows on the side of the muggers made it easy for the pcs. The fighter got some bruises in meele but the muggers were not that lucky. They fell from maces and swords or arrows and stones. Vitner was not used and the dimmwalker fixed the zvorda as good as possible after the fight. Husk got away but his siblings died as heros in the battle. The ranger having a really superb instinct of recognizing things managed to find the lair of the muggers but there only some food and dirty blankets were found. So the stopped at the cave and made rest for the night.

This was the first online session on monday. Today we will continue the jurney to Megnes farm and enter the real aventure. The fight was a littele slow-moving because for everyone on the monitor the rules were completely new. The count down of the initiative went very soomthly btw. It was very tactical and the decisions to work with several weapon actions was challenging. The dimmwalker and vitnerweaver used ranged weapons (sling and bow) the fighter a mace and shield with chain mail and the ranger sword and shield without armour. It will take some sessions to get deeper into it. All in all the players were satisfied with the system and their experience and I as the GM managed to keep the overview on everything.

Uhhh, really great to read about your adventurers.
Very bad planning by the muggers to come to the fight without bows. Well, muggers...
Partying and merry people got the win and survived the fight. This is up to a good start.
Good that all liked the first endeavor.

Cheers for your post and I look forward to the continuation. :)

Well... The muggers used what they had. They had a very hard time lately and therefore lost many of their equipment. Noneteheless they gave a good fight and one went away... injured but alive. Maybe there is a chance he wil revench his brothers...
The next morning our heroes left the cave for good and arrived in Barefield late in the evening. It was about 2 hours till dusk. Everyone ran around like crazy chicken and was shouting a name. The heroes were received by one of Magnes farmhands who explained the daughter of his master was missing. When MAgne arrived the scene he was very shaken and unhappy. His daughter Sola was taken by trolls - you remember the title of the adventure... - and he would give the characters 100 pieces of silver if they returned that girl alive and in godd condition. She was the pritties in all Eijdland and it would be a great loss not only for him.
After receiving some provisions the heroes used the last light of the day to explore the signs - yes they were Trolls - and folled the track into the deep woods. The sund went down and the gloomy surroundingm became even darker. They followed the track into a ravine and encountered some Goblins. They left them for good and marched on till the reached a clearing with a big boulder in the center. The ranger smelled some fire and when the sneaked up to the boulder - the zvorda was not that silent... - heared a voice gomming from the boulder. There rested a hunter who made camp inside an old Jotuns skull. After making friends with him the hunter gave some fresh rabbits and our heroes some veggies. So they spent the night exchanging some stories. The hunter explained that there were indeed trolls on their way northward who were transporting some kind of big bag. He managed to evade them because they looked very hungry. There were some wild animals in the clearing, boars or foxes or something but they kept out of the heroes camp.
The next morning they moved on and came across a Kingtroll and his sidekick a woodtroll who were roasting some humanoid corpse over a fire. The sneaked up on them but didn't want a fight. Therefore they left these two for good and continued their way to their prey. Whe they heared som klicking noises they interrupted their hasty movement and encounterd a troop of dwarves from the Trollridge mountains. Those were exploring a new querry and explained that last night some trolls were running past their camp with a small humangirl. After exchanging some pleasures the moved on an arrived at a hill about noon. The tracks they were following just lead them in a big opening in the flank of the hill. This was their destination. Sola must be here somewhere.
They entered the cave very careful. The vitnerweavress made some noise like marching feet while they were hidden in some bushes but nothing was seen in the entrance. So the went inside just stand before a big hole in the ground. Some logs were erranged over this pit an so they moved on. The first thing they came across was a second entrance to this cave. You will never know if you need an alternative way out. Since this one was too small for Greytrolls and hardly wide enough for th zvorde they just kept moving on to encounter a big cave inhabited by Goblins. The managed to not be seen by those ugly creatures and went for another way. Suddenly the hered a klickering and some laughter of a small girl. With her high pitch of the voice she demanded to winning at least once. MAybe they found Sola right there? The sneaked up to the noise and recognized a really big Troll sleeping on a big chair. His Mace and shield hangig on the wall above him. The little girl was giggling since she won the game of dice once. The much younger Troll was playing with her. The spellweavress sent some word only to the small girls ear an implemented some homesickness in the thoughts of the girl. She tried to run away vut the younger Troll cought her hand and she little girl screamed in frustration and sadness. This was the sign for the fighters. The zvorda an the ranger ran up to the young Troll and hurt him seriously. The dimmwalkress fired her bow as good as possible and the vitnerweaveress tried to send some boulders to the TRolls. Two rounds later the big Troll rised, took his weapons and tried to save his son. But he was too late. The young Troll was dead when he joined the fight. In his grieve he tried to smash the attackers but went down only some rounds later but not without hitting hard where it hurts.
Somw of the Goblins saw what wás done to their king and since the new king always killes the old one recogized the zvorda as their new leader. But becaue the heroes were wounded seriously they had nothing better to do as to leave as fast as possible, leaving all the treasures and their new tribe and everything but Sola where it was. So the arrived at MAgnes farm one day later. He was alreadyy gone to the Thing but his wife was more than happy to see the kid healthy. They were invited as the heroes they were and when Magne arrived ten days later he gave them the 100 Silver as he promised.
Here ends the first adventure of Nestor's heroes. The got 25 XP and can now move on to the next market to spend all their loot. But maybe they go back to the trollcave to demand their tribe, who knows... Sometimes there are silly heroes ;)

Man, that is a good adventure with a really clever twist.
I enjoyed the read quite a lot. Thank you for that.
The role of the zvorda is really something to ponder upon.
The future of the group seems quite interesting to me.

Cheers for sharing.

Another day, the same dungeon... After returning the young girl to her parents and beeing the heroes for one week till Magne returned to his farm, the adventurers got their silver and moved on. Since it seemed much easier to bash some trolls than to work on the fields they decided to visit the trolls once more. For me as the gameleader it was an easy task but why did I prepare Wildheart in the first place? Whatsoever they reached the troll cave a second time. They took the same entrance and were confronted with a trap including some alarming device. When the zvorda stepped on the beams building a bridge via a deep hole, he hardly escaped the trap. He survived but the beam made much noise by falling down so the trolls were warned. They were clever but it seems too clever...
Discussing the new situation inside the cave, only the gaveling noticed two trolls charging inside the cave. The battle was hard and would have turned against the adventurers if the third troll would have remembered their own trap. So he tried to charge the adventurers from the backside but hit the trap and fall several meters into the hole with no chance to get out. The zvorda was hit hard but the Midlander fighter went down hit two times. With no armor those wounds were almost deadly. On the other side one troll died and the other run for his life since the vitnerweaveress and the Gaveling hit with very pointy arrows and slingstones (both had two OR with the last attacks).
With the trolls run away the adventuerers tried to revive the midlander ranger and were successfull. His wounds were closed with the bless of Gave and since the vitnerweaveress managed to follow the last troll they knew where to go, following the blood spots. The last fight was short since the troll was near death already. After that they managed to open the troll's treasure chest finding silver and other interesting stuff. So they collected all their loot and went back to Magnes farm.
The conclusion: Working as heroes is more profitable than working as a farmhand, but it hurts much more ;)

What a cool story!

I love their decision to go back to haunt the trolls again.

It maybe more lucrative but man, it sounds like a very tight situation to me.

So they are very money driven. Well, there are plenty of wondrous treasures hidden in Wildheart!

I am looking forward to read more about them.

Today we will move on. From Magnes farm they will go to the next marketplace and spend some of their hard owned silver. There they will meet their next employer and listen to some legends regarding the wildheart. It will be very interesting to see the players reaction if they wake up one foggy morning and recognize that they reached the heart of the most unforgiving forest.

Well, they have a zvorda to stand watch and to guide them. :)

I wish you and all members of your brave troupe a great evening.
